Volunteer Opportunities
Computer Timing (5 Adults) You will need to come to a training the week before the race. John Estle from Cross Country Consulting is the Timing Manager. The program is pretty simple but it is very important that the data is accurate.
Select Timers (10 Adults) You spot the runner he/she approaches the finish line and records the exact time the runner crosses. (Good eyes/Fast paced) They meet at 9:30 with Jenna Bennett for instructions
Chute/Tear Tag (10 Adults) You work in pairs to tear tags off of bibs and organize on to a spindle. This is very fast paced at times! Be at the finish line at 9:30 for instructions.
Runner (1 youth) Need lots of energy to run back and forth in the chutes. Must listen to the chute manager!
People Movers (10 loud adults) Walk along the chute to keep runners in order. Must be able to yell at them to tear their tags and keep moving. Be at the Finish Line by 9:45 for instructions.
Chute Control (15 adults) 10 adults work at the finish line to get people slowed down and into the correct chute. 5 people work at the beginning of the chute in order to close/open and manage the chutes. Be at the finish line at 9:30.
Race Day Registration (8 people) We need help starting at 6pm with handing out bibs, handing out tee-shirts and collecting money. It can get very crazy at the end!
Registration Data Entry (3 people) we need help during crucial times with entering registration forms. Some crucial moments are Friday, June 13 in the morning, during the day the last week of the race, and then race day during registration from 4 to 10pm. It is a very simple program you just have to be accurate.
Pace Markers/Clean Up (10 kids and adults) Hold up signs to show runners where to line up. Trash bags are provided and this group is asked to check out the parking lot for trash after the runners are gone. The trash is pretty minimal. Be at the start of the race at 9pm.
Spotters (2 adults) Stand at the start of the race and look for children who should not be there. Be on the look out for skateboarders and other potential hazards, ect.
Bib Pick-up (15 people) People who can pass out bibs and tee shirts on June 14.
One-mile split timers (2 people) At the start of the race begin your stopwatch and then ride your bike to the 1-mile point. Stay there and yell out the time to the runners so they may pace themselves.
Course set up (2 people who are familiar with the race) Need to head out early that morning to mark the course. The start, finish and each mile in between needs to be marked. You also need to mark any place where the runners may be confused on which way to go.
Traffic Control (15 people) You will be sent to a particular intersection based on your needs. There are intersections where an older teen could help and there are some that need a loud adult that can deal with mean people in cars. We meet for a briefing and assignment at 8:30 pm at UAF police station.
Finish line fruit and water (10 people) bring your own cutting board and knife. We start cutting at 7:00 pm. Then stay and serve fruit and water to the famished runners! If you can only do one or the other let us know.
Finish line clean up (6 people) Roam around Pioneer Park and pick up debris after the race. Starts about 11:00 pm and can last until 1:00 am. Split shifts are fine.
Balloon Arches (20 people) Inflate helium balloons, assemble into arches, hoist into position. We need all kinds of help. You will learn as you go. Bring the kids; it is a lot of fun! We work in 2 shifts (10am-2pm in Pioneer Park's parking lot and 2pm-6pm lower commons dorm parking lot at UAF) Look for the people struggling to put together a tent and ask for Karen.
